Our Story

New River Valley Orthodontics was founded with one simple goal: to deliver exceptional orthodontic care in a warm, family-friendly environment. Located in the heart of the New River Valley, we proudly serve Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Radford, and the surrounding communities.

Our practice combines the latest technology with genuine compassion. Whether you are a child, teenager, or adult, we believe every patient deserves a personalized treatment plan and a smile they are proud to show the world.

Meet Your Doctors

Madison Smith, DDS, MS

Hi! I am Dr. Madison. I grew up in Fancy Gap, VA and graduated from Carroll County High School in 2016. I attended Radford University where I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology and met Dr. Vaughan. I then continued my education at West Virginia University where I received my Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2023 and Master of Science in Orthodontics in 2026. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Morgantown, but we are so thankful to be back home in Virginia. Outside the office, I enjoy spending time with my family, spending time outdoors, and baking (big chocolate fan!). My husband, Isaac, is also from Carroll County, and we have one daughter who is our entire world. We love watching her learn new things each and every day! I am so thankful for our orthodontics family, and it is my team’s goal to make you feel like family the moment you walk through the door. We can’t wait to meet you!

Dennis L. Vaughan, D.D.S.

Board-Certified Orthodontist

Dr. Vaughan grew up in Pulaski and visited his grandparents in Radford every weekend. He is a graduate of Pulaski High School (1971), Virginia Tech (B.S. Biology, 1975) and Virginia Commonwealth University (D.D.S., 1979). After practicing general dentistry for two years he returned to VCU for a two year residency in Orthodontics. For the next three years he practiced orthodontics in Richmond while also teaching part time in the Department of Orthodontics at VCU. Since 1986 he has maintained a private practice in Radford. "It has been a great privilege and honor to care for the patients and families of the New River Valley where I grew up and have spent most of my life."
In his spare time Dr. Vaughan enjoys travelling and going to classic rock concerts with his wife, spending time with friends and family and playing golf.

Education: Virginia Tech, BS in Biology / Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry, DDS

Patricia Coffey

Orthodontic Dental Assistant

Patricia started her journey in dentistry in 2011 and has a passion to help others feel more confident and love their smile. She married her high school sweetheart, is a busy mom of two, and loves boxers. Her daughter is a pitcher in travel softball and her son enjoys baseball, golf, and using his imagination. They love going to the beach and spending Sundays at church serving others. “They say to choose a job you love and you will never work a day in your life — I have succeeded in that.”

Victoria Crawford

Finance and Insurance Coordinator

I have been in dentistry since 2021 and have had the privilege of helping our patients easily navigate the financial side of their orthodontic care so they can focus on what matters most: their new smile. It is incredibly rewarding to watch our patients' smiles transform and their confidence grow throughout their treatment. Outside the office, I am a proud wife and mother who loves spending time outdoors with my family and enjoying the beach.

Jenny Massey

Scheduling Coordinator

Jenny has been part of the orthodontic team since 2024 after spending 15 years as a stay-at-home mom raising her two daughters. When she is not at the office, you’ll usually find her with her husband, Todd, cheering on their girls from the softball field or basketball court. At home, they enjoy spending time with their dog, Max. She loves being part of the smile journey and seeing the confidence that comes when kids see their new smile for the first time.

Julie Weeks

Orthodontic Dental Assistant

Julie was born and raised in Floyd and is married to her husband, Danny. She has been a dental assistant since 1994 and started in orthodontics in 2014. She loves building relationships with her orthodontic patients, educating them on the importance of good oral health, watching them grow up, and seeing their transformation when their braces come off. You can find Julie working on teeth during the week and working as part of their excavating business on Fridays. Her favorite thing and goal is to live at the beach one day!

Melissa Wright

Orthodontic Dental Assistant

Melissa always dreamed of working in the dental and orthodontic field, a goal she was able to pursue after several years as an elementary school teacher and as a stay-at-home mom raising her three children with her husband, Stephen. She brings warmth, patience, and genuine care to every patient she works with. Melissa loves volunteering at her local church and finds pure joy at the beach, which she considers her favorite place on earth. She especially loves watching her patients’ progress and seeing their confidence grow as their smiles transform.
